Finding trousers that really fit

A good pair of trousers should feel comfortable, sit beautifully and work with your body - without needing constant adjustment.

Yet trousers are one of the garments women tell us they find hardest to buy.

Waists can gape. Waistbands can dig in. Trousers that fit through the hip may feel too large at the waist. A style that looks effortless on one body shape can sit completely differently on another.

At VAAI, trousers are an important part of what we do. We design them in London, refine their fit through fittings with real women, and offer a complimentary trouser fitting service at our Islington store in London.

We help customers find the right size and silhouette, assess the fit through the waist, hip and rise, consider trouser length and proportion, and advise on alterations where appropriate.

The aim isn't simply to find your size. It is to find the shape, proportion and fit that works for you.

How should women’s trousers fit?

There isn't one universally perfect trouser fit. Much depends on the cut of the trouser, the fabric and your own proportions.

But there are some things we consistently look for during a fitting.

The waist

The waistband should feel secure without digging in.

If you regularly find that trousers fit your hips but gape at the back of the waist, this doesn't necessarily mean you need a smaller size. You may simply need a trouser shape - or an alteration - that better accommodates the difference between your waist and hip measurements.

The hips and seat

There should be enough room for the fabric to fall cleanly rather than pull across the body.

Horizontal pulling, pockets opening or fabric straining across the hip can all indicate that more room is needed, even when the waist feels correct.

Equally, excess fabric around the seat can be a sign that the cut isn't quite right for your proportions.

The rise

Rise is often overlooked when women are trying trousers on.

Where a trouser sits between the waist and crotch can make an enormous difference to both comfort and appearance.

A rise that is too short can pull and feel restrictive. Too much length through the rise can create excess fabric.

The right rise should allow you to sit, walk and move comfortably.

The leg

Wide-leg, straight, tapered and softly tailored trousers create very different proportions.

Rather than thinking only about what is fashionable, we look at how the complete silhouette works with your body, your height and the clothes you already wear.

The length

Trouser length can completely change the appearance of a silhouette.

The right length depends on the cut of the trouser and how you intend to wear it - with flats, trainers, loafers, boots or heels.

This is one of the reasons we prefer to look at trousers on the individual rather than assuming one standard length will work for everyone.

Why is it so difficult to find trousers that fit?

Ready-to-wear clothing has to be designed around a set of standard measurements.

Women, of course, aren't standard.

Two women may have exactly the same waist measurement while having very different hips, thighs, height, rise and overall proportions.

Bodies also change over time.

Many of our customers are women in their 40s, 50s and beyond who know what they like and want to invest in fewer, better pieces - but find that some of the shapes or brands they once relied upon no longer work quite as well for them.

That doesn't necessarily mean changing how you want to dress.

Sometimes it simply means understanding fit differently.

Choosing the right trouser shape

We don't believe women need to follow rigid rules about which body shapes can wear particular styles.

Instead, we look at proportion.

A high-waisted trouser can create definition through the waist.

A wider leg can give a beautiful long line and allow fabric to fall away from the body.

A softly tailored trouser can provide structure without feeling formal.

A straighter silhouette can work particularly well as an everyday wardrobe foundation.

Small details matter too - the position of a pocket, the depth of a pleat, the width of a waistband or the point at which a trouser begins to widen can all change how a garment sits on the body.

The best trouser is ultimately the one you feel comfortable wearing repeatedly.

Our complimentary trouser fitting service in London

If you're unsure which VAAI trouser shape or size will work for you, you can visit us in store for a complimentary trouser fitting.

There is no obligation to purchase.

We will look at how the trousers sit at the waist, hip and seat; consider the rise, leg shape and overall proportion; and help you compare different silhouettes where appropriate.

We can also look at length and discuss simple alterations where these would improve the fit.

Bring the shoes you're most likely to wear with your trousers if you'd like us to assess the finished length accurately.

Our fittings are relaxed and practical. They are designed to help you understand what works for your body rather than simply telling you which size to buy.

Trousers designed through real fittings

VAAI is a small independent womenswear brand, which gives us an unusual advantage.

We are able to learn directly from the women who wear our clothes.

Customer fittings have informed the way our trousers have developed over the years - from proportions and grading to the small construction details that can make a trouser more comfortable to wear.

Our signature Camille Ruffle Trouser, for example, has remained part of the VAAI collection season after season rather than being replaced by constant newness.

That philosophy runs throughout the collection.

When something works, we would rather refine it than replace it.

What should I wear to a trouser fitting?

Come as you are.

If you're looking for trousers for a particular purpose - work, travelling, an occasion or simply an everyday pair - tell us. It helps us understand what you need from them.

If length is important, bringing the shoes you expect to wear most often with the trousers is particularly useful.

You are also welcome to bring a favourite jacket, knit or top if you want to see how a new pair of trousers will work with clothes you already own.

Buying fewer trousers - but better ones

For us, good fit is part of buying more thoughtfully.

A beautifully made trouser isn't particularly sustainable if it spends most of its life hanging unworn in a wardrobe.

We would rather help you find one pair that feels right, works with several things you already own and becomes something you reach for regularly.

Designed in London. Refined through real fittings. Made to be worn often and kept for longer.

Trouser Fitting FAQs

Where can I get women’s trousers fitted in London?

Do I need an appointment for a trouser fitting?

You are welcome to visit the store and try our trousers during opening hours. If you would like more dedicated fitting time, you can also arrange an appointment in advance.

How should women’s trousers fit at the waist?

A waistband should feel secure without digging in or creating excessive gaping. If trousers fit well through the hips but gape at the waist, an alteration or a different trouser cut may provide a better fit.

Can trouser length be altered?

Yes. Trouser length can make a significant difference to the finished silhouette. We can assess the length while you are wearing the shoes you are most likely to wear with your trousers.

What should I bring to a trouser fitting?

If possible, bring the shoes you intend to wear with your trousers. You can also bring a favourite jacket, knit or top if you'd like to see how the trousers work with your existing wardrobe.
