Finding a pair of women’s trousers that fits beautifully can be surprisingly difficult.

A waistband may fit while the hips feel too tight. The leg may fall perfectly but the waist gaps at the back. A wide-leg trouser can look elegant on one frame and sit very differently on another.

At VAAI, trousers have been at the heart of our collections since the early years of the brand. Over the years, we have fitted hundreds of women in our Islington boutique and seen first hand how differently trousers can sit from one frame to another. Those fittings have shaped how we design - from proportion and rise to length, fabric and the small adjustments that can make a trouser feel completely different.

What should you look for when buying women’s trousers?

A good pair of trousers should sit comfortably at the waist, fall cleanly through the hip and create the silhouette you want without pulling, twisting or adding unnecessary volume.

When trying on trousers, pay attention to:

  • where the waistband naturally sits

  • how the trousers fit through the waist and hip

  • whether the rise feels comfortable when sitting as well as standing

  • how the fabric falls through the leg

  • the finished length and how it works with your preferred shoes

These details often matter far more than the size printed on the label.

Why do trousers fit at the hips but gap at the waist?

Women’s proportions vary enormously, while standard clothing sizes can only represent a limited set of measurements.

If you have a greater difference between your waist and hip measurements, you may find that trousers which fit comfortably around the hips leave excess fabric at the waist.

In many cases, the answer is not simply to size down. It can be better to fit the fullest part of the body first and then have the waistband adjusted.

A relatively small alteration can make a significant difference to both comfort and silhouette.

Which trouser shape works best for your frame?

There is no single trouser shape that suits every woman.

Rather than focusing too heavily on traditional body shape categories, we prefer to look at the individual frame and how the trouser sits on it.

High-waisted trousers can define the waist and create a longer line through the leg. Wide-leg trousers can feel elegant and balanced when the fabric falls cleanly from the hip. Straighter and softly tailored silhouettes can offer a quieter, more versatile option.

The important thing is proportion.

Two women who wear the same dress size may need very different trouser shapes, lengths or adjustments.

How should wide-leg trousers fit?

A well-cut wide-leg trouser should feel comfortable through the waist and hip before falling cleanly through the leg.

If the trouser is too tight across the hip, the fabric can pull rather than hang properly. If there is too much volume in the wrong place, the silhouette can lose its shape.

Length also matters. A few centimetres can completely change how a wide-leg trouser looks, particularly when worn with different shoes.

Many VAAI trousers include additional hem allowance, allowing the finished length to be adjusted where appropriate.

What are the best trousers for work and going out?

For us, the most useful trousers are rarely designed for only one part of your life.

A beautifully cut wool or tailored trouser can work with a shirt or fine knit during the day and then be styled with silk, jewellery or a more sculptural top for dinner.

The trouser itself does not necessarily need to change. The pieces around it do.

When choosing versatile trousers, look for a clean silhouette, fabric with enough structure to hold its shape and detailing that feels distinctive without limiting how the trousers can be worn.

This is especially useful when building a smaller, harder-working wardrobe.

How long should women’s trousers be?

The ideal trouser length depends on the cut and how you intend to wear them.

Wide-leg trousers often benefit from a longer line, while other silhouettes may work beautifully finishing slightly higher.

Your shoes make a considerable difference too.

If you regularly alternate between flats and heels, it is worth deciding which you are most likely to wear before altering the length.

At our Islington boutique, trouser fittings include advice on both fit and finished length.

When is it worth altering trousers?

If a pair of trousers is almost right, alteration is often worthwhile.

Small changes to the waist or hem can transform the overall fit.

We do not believe every garment should expect every woman to conform to one standard set of proportions. Where possible, the garment should adapt to the woman wearing it.

That principle has become central to how we design at VAAI.

Where can I get women’s trousers fitted in London?

VAAI offers complimentary trouser fittings at our boutique on Upper Street in Islington, North London.

During a fitting, we can help with size, silhouette, waist and hip fit, trouser length and any alterations that may improve the way the trousers sit.

Selected VAAI styles are also available made to order where a particular size, length or fabric is required.

The VAAI approach to trousers

Our trousers are designed in London in limited quantities, with an emphasis on fit, longevity and distinctive detail.

Some are quiet wardrobe foundations. Others, including our signature ruffle trousers, bring a more recognisable VAAI detail to a classic silhouette.

What connects them is the same idea: trousers should feel considered, comfortable and easy to wear.

They should work with the woman rather than asking the woman to fit the garment.
